Explore the measured fatty-acid composition of samples through an interactive diagram of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty-acid families.
36 fatty acid methyl esters
Measured as methyl esters following derivatization. Explore saturated, odd-chain, cis/trans, and omega-3/omega-6 biochemical relationships.
FAMEs assay analytes and pathway relationships

Measurement scopeThe assay measures total fatty acids, including free fatty acids (FFAs) and esterified fatty acids in glycerolipids (mono-, di-, and triglycerides) and glycerophospholipids (e.g., phosphatidylcholines and phosphatidylethanolamines).
Pathway graphic shows relationships among fatty-acyl species; esterification state and lipid class are not determined by this total-fatty-acid assay. Select a compound in either view to jump to its details below.
FAMEs fatty-acid families, elongation, and desaturation
Gold nodes identify all 36 measured methyl esters. Solid arrows show representative reactions between the underlying fatty-acyl species; dashed arrows indicate multi-step relationships. Separate cis/trans isomers and odd-chain species are not assumed to interconvert.
Representative conversion Multi-step or indirect relationship
The network is a simplified guide to the metabolism of the underlying fatty acids, not the derivatized methyl esters. Isomeric forms are analytically distinct. Some branch relationships require unmeasured intermediates, and the map does not establish metabolic flux.
All reported species reflect the FAME-based total-fatty-acid workflow. This assay does not separately quantify fatty-acid pools by lipid class or esterification state.
